Mikania micrantha (MM) has been traditionally used for various health benefits, including mental health, anti-inflammatory, wound dressing, and healing of sores. However, the molecular mechanisms and dose required for the wound healing activity of MM have yet to be reported. Therefore, a study was conducted to evaluate the wound healing potential of a cold methanolic extract of MM through in vitro and in vivo studies. Human dermal fibroblast adult (HDFa) cells were treated with 0 (control), 75 ng/ml, 125 ng/ml, 250 ng/ml, and 500 ng/ml of MMmethanolic extract (MME) for 24 h. MME at 75 ng/ml has significantly (p˂0.05) promoted HDFa cell proliferation and migration. Further, MME has also been shown to enhance the invasiveness of human umbilical vascular endothelial cells (HUVECs), indicating the neovasculature for wound healing. The tube formation assay demonstrated a significant (p<0.05) increase in the angiogenic effect of the MME starting at a concentration of 75 ng/ml as compared to the control. Treatment of excision wounds in Wistar rats with 5% and 10% MME ointment significantly enhanced wound contraction compared to control animals. Incision wounds in rats treated with 5% and 10% MME showed a significant (p<0.01) increase in tensile strength compared to control. HDFa cells, and granulation tissue collected on day 14 post-wounding, revealed the modulation of the FAK/Akt/mTOR cell signaling pathway during the enhancement of wound healing. The results of gel zymography showed increased activity of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in the HDFa cells after treatment with the extract.  It is concluded that MMEcan potentially accelerate cutaneous wound healing.

In diabetes, wound healing gets delayed due to various factors. Icariin, a flavonoid obtained from the plants of the Epimedium genus, exhibited anti-inflammatory, angiogenic, and matrix metalloproteinase-inhibiting effects to heal skin wounds in non-diabetic rats on topical application. Hence, we designed the present study to explore icariin's potential to heal cutaneous diabetic wounds in rats. Diabetes was induced by streptozotocin in male Wistar rats and they were divided into two groups after creating a skin wound of approximately 4 cm2 area. Simple ointment base and 0.04% icariin ointment were applied twice daily for 19 days in the control and the treatment group, respectively. The healing of the wound was assessed based on wound closure, the expression patterns of NF-κB, TNF-α, IL-10, CD31, MMP-2 and -9 activities, and collagen deposition on predetermined days after wound creation. Wounds treated with icariin showed a marked increase in per cent wound closure on different post-wounding days than diabetic control. Upregulation of IL-10 and decreased expressions of NF-κB and TNF-α were revealed in western blots, indicating an anti-inflammatory effect of icariin. Western blot, as well as immunohistochemistry, showed increased expression of CD31 on all days confirming the angiogenic effect of icariin in healing. Icariin treatment reduced MMP-2 and -9 activities and increased deposition of well-organized collagen. Results demonstrate that icariin reduced inflammation and improved angiogenesis and thus, it appears to possess the potential to enhance the healing of diabetic wounds.

Icariin is a flavonoid from plant belonging to the genus Epimedium, commonly known as Horny goat weed or Yin Yang Huo. The compound possesses multiple biological activities which are associated with the modulation of many signalling pathways, like NF-κB, Erk-p38-JNK, and release of various cytokines and growth factors. The present study determined wound healing potential of icariin in male Wistar rats. Icariin ointment (0%, 0.004%, 0.02%, 0.1% and 0.5%), was applied daily (b.i.d.) for 14 days on ≈ 400 mm2 cutaneous wound in different groups of rats. On day 14 post-wounding, 0.1% and 0.5% icariin treatment significantly (P < 0.01 and P < 0.001, respectively) increased wound contraction, as compared to control. Western blots revealed upregulation of IL-10 and downregulation of NF-κB and TNF-α. Increased expression of CD-31 showed abundance of microvessels in healing tissues after treatment with icariin. The MMP-2 and MMP-9 activities were reduced in icariin treated groups. Masson's trichrome staining revealed relatively better completion of re-epithelisation as well as increased deposition of well organised collagen fibres in the healing tissues compared to control. It is concluded that icariin has potential to accelerate cutaneous wound healing in rats.

Six cases of coenurosis were reported in a local Black Bengal goat within the age group of 6 months to 1 and half years with the complaint of swelling present on the body surfaces at different anatomical sites. On palpation, the swelling was non-painful and fluctuating uniformly under the skin. All the animals exhibited almost similar signs and symptoms except for three animals which had mild gastro-intestinal problems. All the clinical parameters (heart rate, respiratory rate and rectal temperature) and blood haemoglobin levels (range 10-12 g %) were within the normal physiological limits. After sedation and restraint with Sequil (Triflupromazine HCl 1 mg/kg, IM), the cysts were removed carefully to avoid breakage. Identification was done on the basis of morphology and microscopic studies of scolices, suckers, pattern of rostellum and hooks present which gives confirmation of the cysts under discussion as Taenia gaigeri. All the animals recovered uneventfully from surgery after one week without any complications and on record there was no reoccurrence of the condition within 1 and half months of observation.
